The Moncade Castle in Orthez was built between the 13th and 14th century and bears witness to Gaston Fébus, Vicomte de Béarn and Comte de Foix's ambition to make Béarn a completely separate Pyrenean State. The astle is 110 metres high and dominates the town.

You'll love !

  • its defensive system
  • its reconstitution with son et lumière
  • the extensive view
  • an immersion in the Middle Ages

In the time of the knights

The moat is an exceptional example of medieval military architecture, with its original geometric structure and meticulous finish. The vertical slope of the escarpments eliminated all blind spots, making the fortress impregnable.

The wall protecting the castle esplanade also features an original triple arch system. Each niche houses three archways, enabling the posted gunner to follow his target into the moat.

Entering the keep

The moment you enter the keep through the ogival door, you are surprised by the thickness of the walls. On the first floor, the former guard room, a sound and light reconstruction evokes the history of the castle.

At the top, there's a breathtaking view of the town and the Pyrenees! Orthez and its Picon tiled roofs, its hidden gardens...

There are several exhibitions in the dungeon. For those unable to reach the top, a 3D film retraces the visit on the ground floor.
