Le refuge des pèlerins

Dans un village des coteaux béarnais, à Lacommande, se trouve une des rares commanderies* encore en élévation, la Commanderie de Lacommande.

We love !

  • the chambre sourde, the only one of its kind in Europe

Built in the 12th century by Gaston IV le Croisé, this hospital complex served as a refuge for pilgrims taking the Arles route of the Chemins de Compostelle, between Lescar and Oloron-Sainte-Marie. Today, the church and hospital are listed Historic Monuments.

In place of the original cloister, a park planted with trees and flowers is home to the former cemetery, which contains a large collection of discoid (disc-shaped) funerary stelae from the 17th century.

The 12th-century church of Saint-Blaise is a jewel of Romanesque art. Inside, in the choir, finely sculpted capitals depict biblical and mythological scenes, as well as scenes from everyday life.

Just opposite, the Maison des Vins is the ideal place to discover the richness of the Jurançon vineyards: sweet and dry wines and other local products are on offer. It's the perfect place to take a gourmet break.

*A commandery is the residence of a commander (dignitary) of certain religious and/or military orders.
