The Maison Chrestia (in Orthez) is an attractive 18th-century Béarn-style residence.

The French poet Francis Jammes, who was also a novelist, playwright and critic, lived here from 1897 to 1907.  It was in this house that he wrote : De l'Angélus de l'aube à l'Angélus du soir, Clara d'Ellébeuse, le Deuil des primevères, Almaïde d'Etremont, le Roman du lièvre, Pomme d'anis, Clairières dans le ciel...
Today the Maison Chrestia is the headquarters of the Francis Jammes Association, which was set up in 1982 in Orthez to promote the poet's work in France and abroad.

As soon as it was founded, the association received a substantial donation from the Jammes family, including manuscripts, correspondence, books, music scores, photographs and illustrated books. This collection has been supplemented by other acquisitions and donations over the years. In 2012, Maison Chrestia was awarded the Maison des Illustres label by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication.

Discover the poet's work in the company of enthusiastic volunteers who will help you relive his story.
