Start your day in Orthez at the Moncade Castle, Gaston Fébus' stronghold. From the height of its 141 steps at the very top of the keep, or you can survey the town which was once the capital of Béarn and an uninterrupted view of the Pyrénées. Lunchtime

Just 15 minutes from Orthez the riverbanbeckons for lunch. Why not picnic at Lendresse and then take an hour's walk on a guided footpath which takes you through the origins of the village learning about biodiversity. On the Lendresse road you briefly cross the industrial area of Lacq.... but that's another story!

Afternoon

From Lendresse you have two options:

-Hardly 10 minutes away visit the Moulin de Candau at Castetis, a 16th century watermill which has been fully restored and is inhabited offering guided tours. For 4 centuries it has proudly ground wheat to feed the local population. Now it's back at work! Don't miss its museum devoted to millers' tools.

-Just 15 minutes away from Lendresse at Labastide-Cézéracq, there is a workshop with ancient tools covering traditional trades: those of the blacksmith, barrel maker, shoemaker, clock maker. Also toys, linen, kitchen utensils and other objects from times now past. A small moment in time to share with an enthusiast with a taste for anecdotes!
